o   Creativity

Creativity can be enhanced through use of the Internet.  In order to stimulate learning and creativity for a wide variety of students, this multimedia production includes power point presentations, videos with sound, colorful illustrations and graphics, and interactive assessments.   To encourage active participation in learning the student will navigate independently through this multimedia production.  The student can choose what lesson he/she would like to do first.  The student can also choose to navigate the website in sections or all at one time. To enhance retention, the student can review the video and retake the assessment.

In the classroom, teachers can encourage creativity by giving their students choices and different options when it comes to assignments and projects.   The educator may give the students an option to view the power points as a group in class.  This would allow for group discussion and interaction.  Assessments can also be taken as a group, incorporating the use of clickers, so students can answer anonymously.  The nursing educator can also bring the equipment for preparing and administering an intramuscular injection to class for the students to practice.

o   Higher-Order Thinking Skills

Higher order thinking skills and processes will be incorporated throughout both lessons.  The students will build on content learned during their freshman and sophomore years.  The PowerPoint presentations in Lessons 1 and 2 begin with review questions covering previously learned content to prompt student recall.  The online quiz will assess higher order thinking skills with questions that require understanding, analysis and evaluation.  The instructor can also stimulate higher-order thinking skills by providing the students with instructions for a self-guided practice activity.  This self-guided activity capitalizes on the kinesthetic learning style.  The activity consists of ordering supplies online and practicing injections on simulated surfaces.  The injection is commonly performed on a piece of fruit such as an orange.  The student will be asked to record the exercise and submit the video to the instructor for evaluation. (Appendix G)   If the educator chooses to use this multimedia production in the actual classroom, he/she can stimulate higher order thinking skills by encouraging class discussion and questions.  Engaging the students in conversation will allow the educator to assess the studentsÕ thinking processes and understanding of the material presented.

o   Mental Habits of Mind

Mental habits of mind will be incorporated throughout both lessons.  For successful completion of both lessons, the students will apply past knowledge (such as safety procedures, personal protection equipment, and asepsis) learned in their freshman and sophomore years to new content included in this multimedia production. The PowerPoint presentations in Lessons 1 and 2 begin with review questions covering previously learned content to prompt student recall.   The student will gather new information, independently, from this multimedia instructional project using his/her kinesthetic, auditory, and visual senses. The student will have the opportunity to watch and listen to the video presented in this lesson.  The student will navigate the web site independently building flexibility and confidence in his own learning ability.  If the educator chooses to use this multimedia production in the actual classroom, he can stimulate mental habits of mind by encouraging class discussion and questions.  The educator may encourage the students to discuss his or her personal experiences theyÕve had with medication preparation and intramuscular injections.  This discussion allows the educator to assess the studentsÕ understanding of the material presented.

á      Differentiation

á      Readiness

o   Sophomore nursing students in their spring semester have successfully completed the classes prerequisite to this instruction.

á      Learning Modalities

o   Auditory:  Students who prefer hearing information will benefit from podcasts and narrated instructional videos.

o   Visual:  Students who learn best through seeing information in charts or pictures will benefit from those presented throughout the multimedia instruction.

o   Kinesthetic:  Students who learn best by using concrete examples will benefit by completing the self-guided practice activity.  (Appendix G)

á      Motivation and Interest

o   Students are generally motivated and interested in learning the required skills as a component of the nursing course in order to earn a passing grade.  If a student does not receive a satisfactory grade of 78% or higher, he/she does not progress any further in the nursing program.

o   Technology in learning is appealing to many students and can be a motivating factor when acquiring new knowledge.

á      Activities

o   The created instructional activities vary in the level of complexity and degree of abstract thinking required.

o   Content is broken down into smaller, more manageable parts that include structured directions for each part.

á      Independent Study

o   Students are able to work independently and at their own pace.

o    Students may also repeat multimedia course content as needed for review and reinforcement.

á      Assessment

o   Performance-based assessment includes quizzes, tests, and skills practice/performance.

o   Assessment is on-going and interactive.
